Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) gloves are gloves specially designed for the sport of MMA. They are designed with less padding and protection than traditional boxing gloves or sparring gloves, so the fighter has a better grip and freedom of movement. Here are some features of MMA gloves:
  • Lightweight: MMA gloves are usually lighter than other types of gloves, which gives the fighter more freedom of movement and prevents fatigue.
  • Less padding: MMA gloves have less padding than boxing gloves or sparring gloves, so the fighter can feel and grip better.
  • Flexibility: Due to the less padding and light weight, MMA gloves can give the fighter more freedom of movement during fighting.

What is the difference between an MMA glove and an MMA sparring glove?

The main difference is the padding of the gloves. The padding on the regular gloves is thin and provides protection for the knuckles. These gloves are lighter and offer more flexibility than sparring gloves, which makes the gloves extremely suitable for practising your grip and grappling techniques (grappling & submissions).

Sparring gloves have thicker padding than regular MMA gloves, so you have more protection during sparring sessions and are less likely to give each other a black eye.

The MMA sparring gloves are also heavier; this, in combination with the thicker padding, provides extra protection for your hands.

What size MMA gloves should I choose?

The right size MMA glove depends on the size of your hand. Here are some guidelines to determine the right size:

  • Measure the circumference of the widest part of your hand (usually just above the knuckles) with a tape measure
  • Compare this circumference with the glove size charts (this varies per brand)

Keep in mind that gloves can stretch over time, so it is best to choose them slightly tighter rather than loose. If you are between two sizes, it is usually better to choose the smaller size. If in doubt, it is best to visit our store in Amsterdam to try on the gloves.
